Mr Arjit Mukherjee MBBS FRCSI FRCS (General Surgery)
Chair

He is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon with over 30 years of experience in general and colorectal surgery. He completed his basic surgical training in Ireland before undertaking higher surgical training in the West of Scotland and the London Deanery.

He subsequently completed a Fellowship in Peritoneal Surface Malignancy at the National Pseudomyxoma Unit, Basingstoke, where he developed advanced expertise in the management of complex colorectal disease and peritoneal surface malignancies.

Mr Mukherjee has a longstanding commitment to surgical education and the development of future surgeons. He is actively involved in undergraduate medical education and higher surgical training within the West of Scotland and serves as a Senior Examiner for the Intercollegiate FRCS Exit Examination, contributing to the assessment and maintenance of standards for surgeons completing specialist training across the United Kingdom and Ireland.

He has held several leadership roles within NHS Lanarkshire, including Managed Clinical Network (MCN) Colorectal Lead, Surgical Lead for University Hospital Hairmyres, and Endoscopy Training Lead for the surgical unit. In these roles, he has been instrumental in service development, clinical governance, and the delivery of high-quality patient care and surgical training.

Mr Mukherjee has also maintained an active interest in clinical research throughout his career. He has presented his work at national and international scientific meetings and has published in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) and the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP), reflecting his ongoing commitment to professional development, research, and advancing colorectal surgical practice.

As Chair of the West of Scotland Surgical Association, Mr Mukherjee is committed to supporting the surgical community through education, mentorship, professional collaboration, and the promotion of excellence in surgical practice across the region.

Mr Khurram Khan FRCSEd, FFSTEd, FAcadMEd, SFHEA, FCMI

Mr Khurram Shahzad Khan is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at University Hospital Hairmyres, NHS Lanarkshire, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. He is also Regional Surgical Advisor for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

His clinical and academic interests focus on benign biliary disease, particularly evidence-based gallstone pathways, index-admission cholecystectomy, intra-operative cholangiography, and single-stage management of bile duct stones using laparoscopic common bile duct exploration.

He has a strong interest in surgical education, regional academic engagement, collaborative research, and service improvement. As Honorary Secretary of the West of Scotland Surgical Association, he supports the delivery and development of WoSSA’s regional academic programme, including research meetings, trainee engagement, abstract review processes, prize recognition, and cross-site collaboration across the West of Scotland surgical community.

Mr Jamie Park

Jamie graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2007 and completed his surgical training through the West of Scotland training programme. Alongside his clinical training, he undertook a PhD between 2012 and 2015 and subsequently held a Clinical Lecturer post until 2021, combining surgical practice with academic research and teaching.

Following completion of his training, he undertook a specialist fellowship in peritoneal malignancy at Basingstoke before being appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

His specialist interests include colorectal cancer and peritoneal malignancy, with a particular focus on improving the care and outcomes of patients with complex cancer. He is currently Clinical Lead for the Department of Surgery and Lead Clinician for the development of lower gastrointestinal cancer clinical management pathways across Scotland. 

Mr Norman Galbraith

Mr. Norman J. Galbraith is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and a Senior Clinical Research Fellow with the School of Cancer Sciences at the University of Glasgow. He completed his core and higher surgical training in Edinburgh and Glasgow, respectively. During this time, he completed a PhD at the University of Louisville, KY (USA) in studying host immune defences in major trauma and surgical sepsis. Following CCT, he returned to the US for an Advanced Colon and Rectal Surgical Fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. His clinical interest is minimally invasive and oncologic colorectal surgery, with research interest in innate immune biology of colorectal cancer.

Mr Scott MacDonald

Scott MacDonald is a current ST5 in General Surgery, with a future subspecialty interest in colorectal surgery. He has a keen research interest and currently completing his PhD via the University of Glasgow, investigating the outcomes of emergency stoma surgery, and how these can be improved. He has been a serving member of the WoSSA committee since 2021.

Ms Iona Robertson

Iona is an ST6 in General Surgery in the West of Scotland with a subspecialty interest in benign upper GI surgery. Iona graduated from University of Dundee medical school and then moved to Glasgow for foundation and surgical training. Outside of work she is a keen racquet sports player and dressmaker.
